Response to Intervention and the Autonomous Learner Model:
A Complete Approach for the Gifted and Talented
By Dr. George T. Betts and Robin J. Carey, M.A.
This book is a valuable, user-friendly resource that blends gifted education and Response to Intervention through the use of the Autonomous Learner Model.
The Autonomous Learner Model (ALM), developed by gifted kids for gifted kids, was designed to meet the diverse cognitive, emotional and social development of gifted learners. The ALM is comprised of Five Dimensions: Orientation, Individual Development, Enrichment, Seminars, and In-Depth Study.
In the Response to Intervention (RtI) framework, students are provided high quality, effective instruction at the universal, or classroom level. A problem solving team approach is utilized to examine data and monitor student progress to determine appropriate interventions or instructional approaches in order to effectively serve the needs of the learner.
Implementing the RtI framework in concert with the Autonomous Learner Model allows us to focus on the learner and not the labels they acquire as they pass through the school system. Together, RtI and the ALM provide a complete approach to meeting the needs of the learner of the future: the 21st Century Autonomous Learner.
