About the Autonomous Learner Model (ALM)

This conference is designed for educators who seek a broad view of gifted education. Emphasis is on the major dimensions of the Autonomous Learner Model. You may attend as many as 15 sessions (from an offering of 52 different titles), as well as two dynamic keynotes. Additionally, the relaxed and informal environment provides for interaction with presenters and conference participants. We welcome educators, family, friends and children.

The ALM is designed to specifically meet the diversified cognitive, emotional and social needs of high ability students. Today the ALM is recognized as one of the most influential and effective models for facilitating ALL students in becoming 21st Century Learners.

Experience the beauty and serenity of the high country in one of the most breathtaking settings in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Located just minutes from Rocky Mountain National Park, the Estes Park Center/YMCA of the Rockies is a modern, full-service conference center and family resort. Be sure to bring your fishing pole, hiking boots and a bottle of sunscreen. June 22 – 27, 2010

A Special Welcome

Welcome educators to our 24th Annual Conference, a unique educational experience designed just for you. We encourage you to bring your family and friends to experience the warm and close-knit atmosphere of the ALM Conference. You all will enjoy the YMCA, Rocky Mountain National Park, and the beautiful town of Estes Park.

  • Day programs are sponsored by the YMCA for children three years old and up. Activities include nature walks, hiking, swimming, and crafts. These programs are offered separately through the YMCA, and are not part of the ALM Conference. If you are interested in having your children participate in these fun, well-supervised activities, please contact the YMCA at (970) 586-3341 ext 1280, as soon as possible, as space is limited.
  • “Larks” will enjoy sunrise hikes, and the chance to observe wildlife in the Rocky Mountains.
  • Optional evening activities will be offered by the ALM Support Staff, including hiking, “autonomous” baseball, a cookout, the 15th Annual “ALM Brain Bowl,” western horse-drawn hayride and a Talent Show.
  • You may use all of the camp’s facilities and combine your learning experience with an unforgettable family vacation. The conference will take place in the heart of the majestic Rocky Mountains, near scenic Estes Park, Colorado.
  • Many participants, their families, and friends look forward to a trip to the Rockies and to casting their line in the legendary high-country streams. If you’re eager to try your hand at catching beautiful trout, we have a Fishing Expert in Residence: Ralph Lee. Ralph has explored all of the best fishing spots in the area and will gladly share his favorite fishing holes.

Training the Trainer

The “Training the Trainer ” program allows educators t o be certified to present on the Autonomous Learner Model. Participants will attend two summer conferences, write a personal educational plan, select specific sessions to attend, and complete projects throughout the year. Special sessions will be included in the schedule.
